A day at the zoo

When we started the day, our plan was to head to Storybook Land to meet up with some friends of ours. Little did I know, we would be pivoting on I-95 just outside of Philadelphia due to a little miscommunication. I said to Jesse earlier today that I’m proud of us. This time last year, something like mixing the dates up would completely derail me. I would automatically think about how would Bo’s nap schedule look now that my carefully thought out plan and timeline were no longer happening. I’d ask Jesse to turn around and head home.

Today, however, once we realized this mishap, I turned around and asked Bo: “Please Touch Museum or Zoo” to which he took a couple of seconds to think about it and replied “Zoo! Definitely the zoo” so we found ourselves detouring through center-city Philly at 11:00am on Saturday (don’t, just don’t. save yourselves from that whole traffic situation) to head to the Philadelphia Zoo. It turned out to be such a great morning. Something that would’ve caused me so much guilt (because I misread the intitial text) and dread about our schedule being messed up ended up being an unexpected fun morning.

It may seem trivial to some but for someone who dealt with anxiety around my firstborn’s schedule and rarely left the house during his first two years of life, I have come a long way. I have felt so much more confident this time around after having Bee, it feels freeing.

I will say, we do have yearly memberships to the PTM and the Philadelphia Zoo and if you live nearby, I highly recommend it. We actually put the PTM membership on Noah’s Christmas list last year and it was such a great gift from his grandparents. Having these memberships means we can be spontaneous and just hop in the car and go without much thought. I don’t know why I’m surprised but having places like these that cater to families and little kids just makes the experience so much better. We’ve learned to pack our lunch, time leaving for them at the start of Bee’s morning naps which usually puts us at the location at opening and bypassing any mid-morning traffic. These adventures with the kids are so rewarding and tire them out. Something to keep in mind for future gift suggestions.

What are some fun adventures you plan?
